Tteokbokki (떡볶이) is One of the most popular Korean street food and definitely a comfort food to Korean.
Most of Korean have memories of eating tteokbokki with their friends in school.
Sweet and spicy tteokbokki is a children's favorite snack and is very popular among adults as well, especially women.
It is very common street food but difficult to make it tasty.
Today, I would like to introduce simple and easy recipe for Rose Tteokbokki.
It is not a stereotype of tteokbokki but Rose Tteokbokki (cream sauce) which is a thing in Korea currently.


What is Tteokbokki?

Tteokbokki is a Korean food that stir-fried or boiled rice cakes (떡) and ingredients in sauce.
It is the most popular food in Korea, and it is a street food that everyone likes.
The name of Tteokbokki is a combination of "Tteok (떡)" which means 'rice cake' and "bokki (볶이)" which means 'stir-fired'.
Except for some Tteokbokki, however, it is not a sir-fired food but boil down.


During Joseon Dynasty, royalty ate it in the form of soy sauce tteokbokki and this style of Tteokbokki is called Royal court tteokbokki (Gungjung tteokbokki).
Gochujang (red chili paste) tteokbokki, which is eaten in modern times, was originally made in Shindang-dong in 1953 and has since spread nationwide.
The main ingredient of it is very simple, and it has a big difference in taste depending on the mix and seasoning, and tastes very different from store to store.

Recently, there have been many franchises such as Sinjeon Tteokbokki, Yeopgi Tteokbokki, Baetteock.
Before around 10 years ago, it used to be 1,000 won to 2,000 won (1 dollar to 2 dollar) and sweet and spicy, has become very spicy and expensive for 10,000 won to 14,000 won (10 dollar to 13 dollar) due to the spared of this franchises.

Furthermore, since covid-19 have been spread, people are avoiding eating at restaurants and delivering food at home.
Most of delivery food is sold at least 10,000 won to 15,000 won and the one of most popular delivery food Tteokbokki is around 14,000 to 18,000 won (11 dollar to 15 dollar).
For these reason, tteokbokki became more expensive.

What is Rose Tteokbokki?

As of 2021, it is a very popular Tteokbokki in Korea.
As rose Tteokbokki from a Tteokbokki chain called Baetteok became famous, various chains also began to sell rose Tteokbokki.
Crean sauce, Gochujang, bacon, and sausages are added, making them moderately spicy, creamy, and sweet.


Types of Tteokbokki

  • Regular Tteokbokki : Gochujang tteokbokki, sweet and spicy tastes. 
  • Gireum-tteokbokki : Stir-fired it with oil without watery sauce. It was made in a public market in Seoul. It's spicy and crispy.
  • Shindan-dong Tteokbokki : Tteokbokki originated in Sindang-dong, Seoul. While general tteokbokki sells already made tteokbokki, Shindang-dong tteokbokki is to boil rice cakes, noodles, fish cakes, vegetables, and ham in a pot at the customer's table on the spot.
  • Jajang tteokbokki : Tteokbokki made with children's favorite tteokbokki and not spice paste.
  • Royal court tteokbokki (Gungjung tteokbokki) : Stir-fried meat, vegetables, and rice cakes in soy sauce.
  • Rabokki : Stir-fried rice cake with ramen (noodles) in tteokbokki.

Recipe

  • Prep Time : 10 minutes
  • Cook time : 20 minutes

Ingredients

1Tbs = 15ml
  • 150g (5.29 ounces) Ttoek (Korean rice cake)
  • 3 Bacon slices
  • 90g (3.17 ounces) Sausages
  • 75g (2.6 ounces) Sweet potato noodles (Cellophane noodles, glass noodles) (Optional)

Sauce

1Tbs = 15ml
  • 200ml Cream 
  • 300ml Milk
  • 3Tbs Gochugaru (Korean chili pepper powder)
  • 0.5Tbs Chicken stock
  • 2Tbs Honey or sugar
  • 0.5Tbs Curry powder
  • 0.5ts Salt (If you need)

Instructions

Step 1. Put rice cake (Tteok) into water for about 5 minutes.
Step 2. Put  Sweet potato noodles (Cellophane noodles, glass noodles) into hot water for about 10 minutes. (Optional)
Step 3. Cut bacon into slice and make cuts on the sausages. 
Step 4. On the high heat, stir sausage and bacon until it is cooked.

Step 5. Pour all of sauce (Cream, milk, gochugaru (Korean chili pepper powder), chicken stock, honey or sugar, curry powder, salt (if you need))

Step 6. Cook it  until it boils while foaming.
